The Accelerated High School (AHS) program offered by the University of Pittsburgh is a challenging academic opportunity designed to indicate college readiness. It is aimed at high school students who are academically mature and independent, and who are prepared to meet the course requirements of the University's Kenneth P. Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences. The program allows participants to enroll as part-time, non-matriculated students and undertake up to six credits per term while continuing their high school education. The program's curriculum is rigorous, with extensive assignments both inside and outside of class. Students admitted to AHS are held to the same academic standards and regulations as all other undergraduates in the Dietrich School. The specific course options and requirements vary, and students may need to take a placement exam to assess their readiness for certain subjects. It is important to note that students may not be registered for both College in High School and Accelerated High School in the same academic year. To participate in the program, students must be at least 16 years old and in their junior or senior year of high school. They also need written approval from their parent or guardian, their high school principal or guidance counselor, and in some cases, the relevant University academic department. As part of the application process, students must submit an AHS application and their most recent high school transcript. The program is offered in different terms, and there are specific deadlines for application and registration for each term. It is advised that all required materials be submitted no later than five weeks before the beginning of the term to maximize the chance of getting into the desired class. Upon acceptance into the AHS program, students will have a meeting, either in person or by telephone, with an advisor to select their courses. After completing the program, students will have not only earned college credits but also gained invaluable experience of university-level coursework and expectations. This will give them a clear advantage in their future academic pursuits.
