The Accelerated Learning Academy (ALA): Medical Science, offered by the W.E.B. Du Bois Scholars Institute, is designed to bring diversity to STEM studies and industries, focusing on individuals who are underrepresented in these fields. This learning opportunity is specifically tailored for high-achieving, forward-thinking students. The curriculum of the Medical Science track provides a broad understanding of biological systems and advancements in science. It introduces students to different areas of biology and the basic sciences of medicine, including medical specialties and interdisciplinary fields associated with animal and human health, disease diagnosis, and treatment. Students will explore key topics such as cells and genes, natural selection, chemistry, and life as information. The program is divided into different workshops, each focusing on different aspects of medical science, such as genetic information, genomic organization, molecular causes and effects of DNA damage on protein function and disease, cellular mutations, and the complex etiology of cancer. The ALA: Medical Science is led by industry experts and renowned professors from major medical and research institutions. It is delivered through workshops and other activities that foster learning, mentoring, and interaction with world-class scientists both inside and outside the classroom. The learning opportunity is set up in a workshop format, with each workshop spanning a weekend. For example, "Cells & Genes" is scheduled for February, "Natural Selection & Chemistry" for March, and "Life as Information" for April. However, specific dates may vary each year. It is strongly recommended that students bring a laptop to each weekend workshop. Upon completion, participants will have a broader understanding of biological systems and advancements in science. They will have gained valuable knowledge in medical biology and science, preparing them for further studies or careers in STEM.
