The Advanced Fiction workshop at Uptown Stories offers young writers aged 14-18 a unique opportunity to refine their storytelling skills in a collaborative and supportive environment. Led by Kate Reuther, a seasoned educator and accomplished author, this workshop caters to students familiar with the basics of fiction writing who are eager to elevate their craft. Participants explore various genres, including historical, fantasy, and realistic fiction, while focusing on the elements that make stories memorable and engaging. Throughout the workshop, students will delve into essential writing techniques, such as developing natural, character-driven dialogue, managing pacing, crafting inciting incidents, and mastering plot twists and satisfying endings. The curriculum encourages writers to draw inspiration from their favorite authors and explore new works that broaden their literary horizons. Sessions are designed as interactive spaces where participants can read, critique, and discuss each other’s work, fostering a sense of community among budding authors. The workshop meets in person on Tuesdays from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm at 178 Bennett Ave in Washington Heights. Running from mid-September through early December, the course spans 11 sessions, culminating in a celebratory reading and publication in Uptown Stories’ anthology. With a small class size of 14, each student receives personalized feedback and guidance, ensuring a supportive learning experience. The program operates on a “Pay-What-You-Can” model, making it accessible to all, regardless of financial background. By the end of the workshop, students will have honed their writing skills, gained confidence in their storytelling abilities, and experienced the thrill of seeing their work in print.
