The Annual DNA Day Essay Contest, organized by the American Society of Human Genetics (ASHG), commemorates significant milestones in genetics, including the completion of the Human Genome Project and the discovery of the DNA double helix. This contest is open to high school students worldwide (grades 9-12), challenging them to explore and reflect on important genetic concepts through well-reasoned essays. Participants are required to write essays that demonstrate a deep understanding of genetic science and are supported by evidence and citations. Key skills developed through this contest include scientific reasoning, critical thinking, and effective writing. Essays are rigorously evaluated by ASHG members using a detailed rubric across three scoring rounds. The contest is conducted entirely online, with the submission site opening in early January and closing in early March. Winners are announced on April 25th, DNA Day. Prizes include monetary awards for students and genetics materials grants for their schools. Eligibility criteria specify that essays must be written by individual students and submitted by a teacher, administrator, or parent if homeschooled. Essays must be in English, up to 750 words, and include at least one reference. The contest provides an excellent opportunity for students to deepen their understanding of genetics and gain recognition for their academic efforts.
