The Art Exchange program is a full-scholarship visual arts program for teens aged 13 to 15, provided by Arts Umbrella in partnership with the Vancouver Art Gallery. This year-long contemporary arts program allows students to explore, critique, and observe exhibitions at the Vancouver Art Gallery and respond to the exhibition by creating their own work at Arts Umbrella. The program offers students behind-the-scenes access, workshops, and tours of multiple exhibitions, opportunities to interact and learn from exhibiting artists and gallery professionals. Back at the Arts Umbrella studios, students engage in mentored and self-directed projects, with opportunities to curate, install, and critique their work in the Cassils | Henriquez Exhibition Gallery. The program runs from October to June and takes place at the Vancouver Art Gallery and Arts Umbrella Granville Island. Participants are expected to submit a portfolio and a letter of intent as part of the application process, which is due by September 20. The portfolio should include completed work and sketchbook explorations showing study and experimentation, while the letter of intent should express interest in the program and provide a description of the student's art practice. While specific outcomes of the program are not explicitly stated, participants can expect to gain a deeper understanding of contemporary art, improve their critical thinking and observation skills, and develop their artistic abilities through hands-on projects and direct interaction with professionals in the art world. The program aims to foster creativity and self-expression, equipping students with skills they can carry with them for life.
