The Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC), organized by the Australian Maths Trust (AMT), is designed to challenge and extend students' problem-solving skills in mathematics. As one of Australia's longest running and most well-known maths competitions, the AMC has been engaging students since 1978. The competition is open to students from Year 3 to Year 12, divided into five divisions: Middle Primary, Upper Primary, Junior, Intermediate, and Senior. Participants tackle a variety of mathematical topics, including basic arithmetic, fractions and ratios, algebra and pre-algebra, geometry, measurement, statistics and probability, and problem-solving techniques such as enumeration. The competition consists of 30 questions in a question-and-answer format, with 25 multiple-choice questions and 5 requiring integer answers. The AMC is delivered both online and through printed papers, providing flexibility in how students can participate. The competition lasts 60 minutes for primary divisions and 75 minutes for secondary divisions. Key dates include the competition period from August 6 to August 8, with deadlines for printed paper entries in early July and online entries in early August. Students receive awards based on their performance, ranging from participation certificates to high distinctions and medals. The competition fosters mathematical competency and problem-solving skills, preparing students for advanced studies and real-world challenges.
