The BDC Youth Photo League, offered by the Bronx Documentary Center, is a free documentary photography and college success program that serves high school students. The main objective of this program is to teach students how to use photography, writing, and research to explore social justice issues, preparing them for college and future careers. Key skills developed include documentary storytelling and reporting, producing and editing news pieces, and creating unique photobooks. This program is delivered in-person at the Bronx Documentary Center Annex. The after-school program for high school runs from late September through the end of May, with sessions held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:30 to 6:30 PM. The summer program runs from July 1 to August 2. The program includes visits with internationally-renowned photographers and excursions to major cultural institutions and media outlets. It also offers opportunities for national and international travel. No prior experience in photography is necessary for participation, making this program accessible to all interested high school students. Participants in the BDC Youth Photo League can expect to gain a strong foundation in documentary photography, the ability to tell stories through a visual medium, and the skills to create their own unique photobooks. The program also provides extensive college prep programming, including one-on-one counseling, financial aid workshops, and college tours, setting students up for success in their future academic and career endeavours.
