The Biotech Research Apprentice Program provided by the University of Kansas is designed for high school juniors and seniors who have an interest in biology or biotech and wish to gain hands-on lab experience. The apprenticeship focuses on assisting senior students with their capstone research projects during the spring semester. As a part of this program, the apprentices will work alongside university students in the lab, aiding in the generation of data, interpreting results, and presenting experiment findings. The program provides an in-depth understanding of laboratory procedures, the operation of various lab equipment, the composition and comprehension of scientific reports, and the planning and execution of successful experiments. These skills and knowledge will enable apprentices to fully engage in the research process and contribute to the advancement of biotech projects. The apprenticeship program occurs on-site, with the apprentices physically present in the lab working alongside KU students, providing them with the opportunity for practical hands-on experience. The program is held during the spring semester, though specific dates are not provided. Applicants for the program need to be at least 16 years old, but no prior lab experience is required. This broad eligibility criterion enables a wide range of interested high school students to participate and acquire the necessary skills and knowledge in biotechnology. Completion of this program equips students with a foundation of laboratory skills and biotech knowledge that can be applied in various domains of science, including biology and biotechnology. Additionally, this program provides a unique opportunity for high school students to participate in actual research projects, which can enhance their understanding of the field and potentially influence their future academic and career choices.
