The Boston Area Health Education Center (BAHEC), established in 1978, is a youth-oriented initiative by the City of Boston that aims to diversify Boston's healthcare workforce. The program focuses on encouraging youth from underserved populations to consider careers in health and public health. BAHEC's curriculum consists of a variety of courses, including Introduction to Medical Careers, Public and Global Health, EMT, Dentistry, and Physical Therapy, among others. The curriculum is designed to provide academic enrichment, professional development, and health career exploration. The program operates both a summer enrichment program and an after-school academic year program. The summer enrichment program, known as the Youth to Health Careers Summer Enrichment Program, runs for six weeks and is designed for students entering grades 9 through 12 living in Boston. It includes interactive classes in math and science, internships in hospitals, community health centers, or health agencies, and weekly field trips. The academic year program offers a range of courses that vary from year to year, providing students with exposure to numerous health careers. The BAHEC program is managed by a team of specialists, including a program director, coordinators, and support specialists. The team guides the students throughout the program, offering both academic and professional support. Eligibility for the program is limited to students entering the 9th to 12th grade who reside in Boston. Accepted students receive a stipend for participating in the program. The main outcomes of the BAHEC program include strengthening the desire to pursue health careers, increasing awareness of health disparities, promoting academic development, and fostering professional development. Students are given hands-on learning experiences and exposure to various health careers, providing them with a solid foundation in public health and the health sciences.
