The Zuckerman Institute's Brain Research Apprenticeships in New York at Columbia (BRAINYAC) program offers high school students a unique and enriching research experience in the vibrant research environment of Columbia University. Designed for 10th and 11th grade students from select partner schools and programs in Upper Manhattan and the Bronx, BRAINYAC provides an unparalleled opportunity to work closely with leading neuroscientists on cutting-edge research projects. This apprenticeship includes weekend training sessions in the spring followed by a seven-week full time, research apprenticeship during the summer. Participants in BRAINYAC are paired with experienced Columbia neuroscientists who serve as mentors throughout the internship. This mentorship allows students to engage directly with ongoing research, learn essential lab techniques, and understand the scientific process from hypothesis to discovery. The program is meticulously crafted to integrate students into the scientific community, offering them firsthand experience in a professional academic setting. The program includes hands-on laboratory work, seminars, and workshops that cover a broad spectrum of neuroscience topics. Students gain valuable insights into research methodologies, data analysis, and the everyday workings of a research lab. This immersive experience not only enhances their technical skills but also strengthens their academic and professional aspirations in science. BRAINYAC is open to students who are nominated by one of the program’s partner organizations, including S-PREP, Lang Youth Medical, Double Discovery Center, Columbia Secondary School, and BioBus. Applications are distributed through these partners each fall, and preference is given to students residing in upper Manhattan and the South Bronx. Through this program, participants emerge with a deeper understanding of scientific research and a reinforced commitment to pursuing careers in science.
