The Caring Teen Volunteer Program provided by Houston Methodist Hospital offers community youths an opportunity to grow personally and professionally. The program aims to equip participants with a deeper understanding of various healthcare careers, and further their maturity and personal development. In the course of the program, volunteers provide supplemental services within the hospital environment, offering them a unique insight into the healthcare sector. It is important to note that the program does not provide observing or shadowing opportunities. The program runs for nine weeks, with each participant required to complete one four-hour shift per week, culminating in a total of 36 hours by the end of the program. This commitment is mandatory for full program completion, with a minimum requirement of 28 hours allowing for two missed shifts without penalty. Any failure to meet these requirements could result in non-acceptance into or removal from the program. The application process for the program is comprehensive and includes the submission of a volunteer profile, preliminary notices, written component (short-answer questions), volunteer availability, background history form, volunteer forms, Employee Health Parental Consent form, a transcript, and photo ID. The program has specific dress code requirements, with volunteers required to wear a designated Caring Teen uniform and hospital photo I.D. badge during their shifts. Volunteer assignments are typically offered Monday to Friday, between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m., with limited assignments available over the weekends. The program encourages participants to stick to their original assignments due to the hospital's needs and the number of Caring Teens in the program. Upon completion of the program, participants will have gained invaluable experience, personal satisfaction, and a deeper understanding of the healthcare industry, which could be beneficial for their future career paths. They also have the chance to network with medical professionals in a world-class hospital setting, make new friends, and create meaningful memories.
