The CCRMC Volunteer Doula Program at Contra Costa Regional Medical Center offers a unique opportunity for volunteers to support birthing persons through pregnancy, labor, delivery, and postpartum experiences. The main objective of the program is to provide continuous non-clinical support and care, aiming to create a meaningful and positive birthing experience. Volunteers are trained to provide emotional reassurance, assist with physical comfort measures, facilitate communication between the birthing person and healthcare staff, and offer guidance on newborn care and breastfeeding. The program delivers training through a two-day workshop specific to CCRMC, focusing on the scope and techniques of a birth doula. This includes orientation to hospital policies and the perinatal unit, followed by hands-on service as orientees. New doulas shadow experienced doulas before attending to patients on their own. The program emphasizes continuous education, peer mentorship, and a supportive community, with regular meetings and the option to pursue additional lactation support training. Volunteers must commit to at least one year of service, providing a minimum of 8 hours monthly. Applicants must be 21 years or older, physically capable of supporting patients during shifts, and undergo a training and orientation process. Upon completing 100 hours of service, doulas receive a certificate and may request a recommendation letter. The program is conducted in-person at the medical center, and the services are provided at no cost to the birthing persons.
