CMU Spark Saturdays is a free program created by the ECE Outreach, part of the Electrical and Computer Engineering department of Carnegie Mellon University. The main objective of the program is to introduce high school students to concepts within the field of electrical and computer engineering, and expose them to engineering as a potential career choice. The curriculum of Spark Saturdays covers a range of topics, from the binary number system and boolean logic to programming in Python, and building circuits with LEDs that can also be used as radios. The format of the program includes 4-5 lab sessions per semester, held on Carnegie Mellon's campus. Each session lasts about two hours and consists of a learning portion and hands-on activity. No prior knowledge is assumed, and students are provided with assistance from Carnegie Mellon graduate and undergraduate students. In terms of instructor information, the program is led by a group of dedicated undergraduate and graduate students, and faculty advisors from Carnegie Mellon University. Eligibility for participation in the program requires that students be in high school during the time the sessions will take place, and have the ability to attend most sessions. This is to ensure that students gain the most from their experience, given the limited space availability. The main outcomes and benefits of participating in Spark Saturdays include a broad introduction to electrical and computer engineering concepts, hands-on experience in lab sessions, and the opportunity to explore engineering as a potential career path.
