College Now at CUNY Hunter College is a collaborative initiative with the New York City Department of Education aimed at preparing public high school students for academic success in college. It primarily focuses on delivering college-level courses for credit, along with other enrichment activities in humanities, arts, social sciences, sciences, and mathematics. Classes are taught by Hunter's full-time or adjunct faculty with varying skill levels, introducing students to the rigors and rewards of higher education. The program is free of charge for all NYC Public High School students. The program is delivered in-person at the Hunter College campus, enabling students to utilize campus facilities such as libraries, computer labs, tutorial centers, and dining facilities. The college experience is further enriched with formal orientations and support services designed specifically for the high school level. Eligibility for the program is mainly limited to juniors and seniors from NYC Department of Education affiliated high schools, although sophomores can also apply. Specific course prerequisites vary; for instance, to take a writing-based, humanities, or non-quantitative science course, students must meet certain score requirements in the ELA or ELA (Common Core) regents, EBRW PSAT, or EBRW SAT. For mathematics or quantitative science courses, minimum score requirements apply for the Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, or Algebra (Common Core) regents, or Math PSAT or Math SAT. A minimum GPA of 75 is typically required, and placement exams may be needed for some Math and/or Science courses. Students who successfully complete the College Now courses with a C grade or better earn college credits that are generally transferable within the CUNY college system, and potentially other institutions. This participation not only provides students with a head start on earning college credits but also enhances their college applications. In addition to academic benefits, students receive Hunter ID cards which allow them to participate in typical Hunter student events and receive discounts for performances at The Kaye Playhouse at Hunter College.
