"Comics and Graphic Novels" is a course offered by the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, designed to guide students through the process of creating unique comics and graphic novels. The main objective of the course is to take students' illustration skills to the next level, with a focus on storytelling. The curriculum introduces various aspects including character development, plot structure, scripting, and story-boarding. Students will also gain skills in penciling, inking, coloring, space, and perspective through the use of a wide variety of traditional and non-traditional media. These may include colored pencils, oil pastels, watercolors, digitally edited drawings, and handmade zines. The course provides inspiration and drawing practice through artist presentations, visits to the Art Institute of Chicago, and exploration of downtown Chicago's public art. These activities serve as an entry into the basics of comic narrative and stylization. Although having basic drawing skills can be helpful, they are not a prerequisite for participation. The course is delivered in-person and has a duration of approximately two months starting from early October till mid-December. Classes take place on Saturdays from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM. The registration deadline typically falls in late September. The course instructor is Alex Dahm. The price for participation is $600. Upon completion of the course, students will have enhanced their drawing and storytelling skills, and gained a comprehensive understanding of the process of creating comics and graphic novels. This will open up opportunities for them in the fields of art and design.
