"Comics and Graphic Novels" is a course offered by the School of the Art Institute of Chicago that guides students through the process of creating distinctive comics and graphic novels. The course places a strong emphasis on storytelling, introducing students to character development, plot structure, scripting, and storyboarding. It further strengthens students' skills in penciling, inking, coloring, space, and perspective through the use of various traditional and non-traditional media. These may include colored pencils, oil pastels, watercolors, digitally edited drawings, and handmade zines. The course takes learners through inspiring artist presentations, trips to the Art Institute of Chicago, and visits to Chicago's vast array of public art. These experiences serve not only as inspiration but also provide drawing practice as an entry into the basics of comic narrative and stylization. Although having basic drawing skills can be beneficial for this course, they are not a prerequisite. The course is delivered in-person with classes meeting every Saturday from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM, starting from the first Saturday of October and ending in mid-December. Please note that there is no class on November 30th. The course is taught by Alex Dahm, though further details about the instructor's qualifications and background are not specified. While the course does not offer any specific certifications upon completion, it equips learners with a mastery of illustrating comics and graphic novels. This includes the development of a unique artistic style, an understanding of narrative structure, and proficiency in various media types. The course costs $600.00, and the registration deadline falls on the last day of September at noon.
