The CSUSB Upward Bound Program is an initiative by California State University San Bernardino that aims to empower high school students, particularly those from low-income backgrounds and potential first-generation college students. The program focuses on fostering success by providing more than 150 students from San Bernardino and Rialto with educational and personal support services. The main objective is to increase high school graduation, college enrollment, and persistence rates. The CSUSB Upward Bound Program covers a variety of key topics and skills. These include academic tutoring, advice and assistance in course selection, help with preparing for college entrance exams, guidance in completing college admissions applications, and support in securing scholarships and financial aid. Additionally, the program offers financial and economic literacy training, personal and leadership development, and exposure to cultural events. During the summer program, students receive instruction in mathematics, lab science, foreign language, composition, and literature. The program is delivered in-person and includes visits to colleges. The staff comprises a team of dedicated professionals including an Associate Director, a Director, a Program Administrative Coordinator, a Program Manager, a Recruitment Specialist, and several tutors. Each staff member brings their unique expertise to the team to ensure the successful delivery of the program. Participants must meet specific eligibility criteria to participate in the Upward Bound Program. These include being low-income, as defined by the Current US Department of Education Federal TRIO Programs Annual Low-Income Levels, being a potential first-generation college student, and being a U.S. citizen or permanent resident. The CSUSB Upward Bound Program offers several benefits to its participants. The program not only facilitates academic development but also contributes to personal growth and leadership skills. It aims to bring about improved retention and persistence rates, leading students towards credit and degree completion. However, the program does not specify the award of any particular certifications upon completion.
