The Community High School Program (CHSP) at Dartmouth College is a unique opportunity that allows high school students who have exhausted all possible classes within their field of interest at their high school to access Dartmouth courses. Available to area high school juniors during the winter and spring terms, and seniors during the fall, winter, and spring terms, the program is free of charge, although students may need to cover the cost of books and materials necessary for the course. The main objective of the program is to provide high school students with the chance to expand their academic horizons by taking college-level courses, thereby gaining early exposure to a collegiate academic environment. The program is jointly administered by the Office of Admissions and the Office of the Registrar, with oversight by the Committee on Instruction. CHSP students are graded and receive college credit on a Dartmouth transcript just like any other Dartmouth student, upholding the same grading, deadline, and conduct standards. While the specific curriculum varies depending on the course selected, there are certain courses not open to high school students, including individual music instruction, studio art courses, and specific writing, mathematics, and history courses. The program facilitates high school students to work with their counselors to select appropriate courses, after which the Admissions Office formally reaches out to the professor to request permission for student enrollment. High school students' participation in the program is endorsed by their high school principal, counselor, or other school official who is responsible for the program at their school. Upon completion of the course, high school students may request an official copy of their Dartmouth transcript, signifying their acquisition of college credits. This unique program thereby provides high school students with an advanced learning environment and early exposure to college-level coursework, fostering further academic growth.
