Design Thinking I is an in-person beginner course offered by The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory's STEM Academy. It is designed to equip students with the ability to solve real-world, human-centered problems using design thinking—a process that involves creative thinking, teamwork, empathy, problem definition, concept creation, prototyping, and testing. Students will learn what design thinking is, when to use it, and how to generate innovative ideas. They will also have the opportunity to create and test a prototype. A significant part of this learning opportunity involves identifying a problem and designing a solution, which students will work on outside of class time through weekly homework assignments. The course is delivered in-person and runs from mid-September to early December. Classes take place on Mondays, from 5:00 PM to 6:30 PM. While the course does not specify prerequisites or eligibility criteria, it is important to note that priority for STEM Academy courses generally goes to students from the state of Maryland. Through this course, students are expected to gain a comprehensive understanding of design thinking. They will learn how to apply this innovative approach to problem-solving in real-world situations, generate creative ideas, and develop prototypes. As this is part of the STEM Academy, students will also benefit from the hands-on learning experience and mentorship from practicing APL computer scientists, engineers, and other STEM professionals. However, the course does not mention any specific certifications or qualifications that participants will earn upon completion. The course costs $49.00.
