Studio Arts Dallas offers a Drawing & Painting course designed for high school students keen to hone their artistic skills. The course's primary focus is on teaching classical art techniques and drawing from observation, which they believe is the most important tool in opening the world of art. Even the youngest students engage with the challenges of figure drawing, simple perspective, composition, and expressive mark making. In this course, students are given the opportunity to work with a variety of professional materials such as acrylics, watercolor, pen and ink, pastels, and charcoal. They are encouraged to draw from still life, costumed models, and their own imagination, learning crucial elements like proportion, perspective, composition, and hatching/cross hatching for value. The studio's collection of still-life materials is designed to surprise and inspire, and on occasion, students may even draw Wyatt, the resident Studio dog. The classes are taught in the studio's unique A-frame building, filled with natural light and thought-provoking objects. The teaching team, led by Director Barley Vogel, comprises of friendly, creative, and hard-working artists eager to inspire confidence and share their joy of the artistic process. The instructors at Studio Arts are uniquely qualified, with many of them being former students of the Studio Arts program themselves, now contributing their own brand of art magic to the mix. While specific prerequisites are not mentioned, the course seems designed for students of all skill levels, with the aim to build abilities upon traditional basics. The course does not impose marks on children’s work, allowing them the satisfaction of their own adventure and encouraging self-reliance and a lifelong hunger for and delight in discovery. As a result, students not only gain technical skills in drawing and painting but also develop creative problem-solving skills and nurture their imagination in an inspirational, supportive atmosphere.
