Drawing Studio, provided by the School of Art Institute of Chicago, is a comprehensive course designed to introduce students to drawing as an expressive medium. The course covers a range of drawing techniques and approaches, including essential elements of 2D design and art such as line, shape, shading, and light. It is intended for beginners and those wishing to further develop their skills and confidence in drawing. Students will explore traditional and contemporary drawing materials and concepts, experimenting with a variety of wet and dry media such as charcoal, graphite, ink, and water-based paints. Aspects of line, perspective, tone, proportion, composition, value, gesture, and contour are also examined as part of the curriculum. Visits to the Art Institute of Chicago to draw inspiration from diverse artworks are a key component of the course, supplemented by discussions on practicing artists. The course is taught by instructor Noelle Africh, both versed in the field of art and drawing. The course structure includes individual and group projects, writing, discussions, and sketchbook exercises, providing a holistic learning experience. It is designed to be repeated for continued skill and idea building, indicating a flexible and progressive learning structure. The course spans from early October to mid-December, with classes meeting once a week. The 14-18 age group, classes take place on Sundays from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM. The registration deadline is set for the end of September. Please note that certain in-person classes may utilize nude models hired by the School. On successful completion of the Drawing Studio course, students will have not only strengthened fundamental drawing skills but also explored a wide spectrum of traditional and contemporary drawing materials and concepts. They will gain a deeper understanding of the essential elements of 2D design and art, fostering creativity and self-expression, as well as building confidence in their drawing abilities. However, the course does not award any specific certification.
