"Entrepreneurship" is a course offered by Rice University's Precollege Program, designed for high school students with an interest in finance and entrepreneurship. The main objective of the course is to educate students on the creative thinking and entrepreneurship that drives the fintech market and the development of disruptive digital technologies. The curriculum explores the transformative innovations in financial markets, such as cryptocurrencies and blockchain, and how they are changing payment processing, investing, and financial services. It delves into traditional financial services, the role of federal banks, the potential for disruption in ecommerce, digital transformation of lending and credit enhancement, and the workings of blockchain technologies. The course is delivered entirely online, allowing for flexible learning. The course format includes video lectures, real-life simulations, engaging multimedia, and curated assignments. It is designed to be completed in 20-30 hours of total instruction and coursework. The course is offered multiple times throughout the year, catering to students' varied schedules. The course is open to students aged 13 and up. This course is led by a mentor who provides guidance and support throughout the course, including direction on assignments and the capstone project. The capstone project involves creating a simple business plan for a fintech product or service. Students can choose to develop their own solution, product, or service, or they can pick an existing fintech company and add their offering. Upon completion of the course, students gain a comprehensive understanding of fintech and its disruptive effects on financial markets. They acquire the ability to analyze key disruptors such as PayPal, Lending Club, Square, and others, understand how fintech companies target their customer base and promote their brands, and learn about the various technologies used by entrepreneurs to deliver financial solutions. Successful completion of the course earns students a Certificate of Completion from Rice University.
