The Expanded Maritime Collaborative (EMC) is a series of 6-week after-school programs for high school students in the Seattle and South King County area. Offered by the Youth Maritime Collaborative, EMC primarily serves youth from underrepresented communities in partnership with organizations such as Sound Experience, Center of Wooden Boats, Sea Potential, and Seattle Skills Center. The main objective of the EMC is to foster awareness, interest, and engagement in the maritime sector throughout the academic year. The EMC curriculum involves a series of experiential learning events. The program begins with relationship building activities to foster a strong, safe community among the participants. This is followed by a series of field trips for career exposure in the maritime sector and a project that supports work being done in a marine science career. Examples of projects include building hydrophones with Orcasound, water quality sampling with DRCC or Puget Sound Keeper, and participating in the floating wetland project. The program takes place every Wednesday from 4pm – 6:30pm, starting from September 21 through October 26. It culminates in advanced preparation for paid internship opportunities such as the Summer Youth Maritime Accelerator Project (YMAP). However, the specific instructor details, prerequisites, or eligibility criteria for the EMC are not explicitly outlined. Upon completion of the EMC, students gain a deeper understanding of the maritime sector, practical experience from field trips, and hands-on experience from the project work. This exposure helps them in their future maritime careers and gives them a head start for internships like the Summer Youth Maritime Accelerator Project.
