Experiential Drawing I, offered by Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) Continuing Education, is a course that considers drawing as a thinking process and a way to explore and broaden creative passages. The course covers critical principles and elements of drawing through a variety of media and methods. Students may use materials such as charcoal, graphite, markers, collage, water-based paint, as well as found materials and invented tools. Key topics include various compositional strategies; tonal studies; understanding volume, weight and contour; line; and form. These are pursued through observation and interpretation. The course places emphasis on maintaining an active sketchbook practice, serving as a reference for larger projects and expressing the students' creative process. This course is the first part of a two-part offering of Experiential Drawing and is delivered online. It is a four-week intensive course that includes two live Zoom meetings. Students should expect to spend a minimum of five hours per week engaging in coursework. Designed for students aged 15–18 in grades 10–12, this course is part of RISD's Advanced Program Online. The instructors for this course are Kirk Maynard and Casey Roonan. One important requirement for the course is that students are responsible for purchasing their own art supplies, equipment, software subscriptions, and/or books. Completion of this course provides students with a solid foundation in drawing principles and techniques, enhances their creative thinking, and equips them with the skills to interpret and represent their observations effectively through drawing. It also prepares them for the second part of the Experiential Drawing course.
