The Explorers Teen Program, offered by The Newark Museum of Art, is a college, career, and life readiness initiative designed to help high school students from the Newark area build essential skills and self-confidence. Students gain this experience by interacting with the Museum's unique collections, resources, and staff. The program equips students with new skills as public speakers, teachers, researchers, and leaders, and students are compensated for their participation. The curriculum includes internships in various museum areas, giving students real-life experience in diverse jobs and fields of study. The program also offers workshops that focus on leadership training, public speaking, team-building, and museum-based art and science projects promoting STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) learning. Additionally, students engage in group trips to other cultural and educational institutions. The program lasts for three to four years, requiring participants to commit to six after-school hours per week during the school year, 60 hours of community service annually, and 25 hours per week each summer. Though the application window has closed, it is typically under review by the end of July. The program has a successful track record, with 100% of students graduating from the program over the past 15 years going on to attend institutions of higher education. Through their participation, students gain valuable life skills, prepare for college and future careers, and receive a comprehensive understanding of various fields, all while being actively compensated.
