FACES for the Future San Diego, offered by Rady Children’s Hospital, is an extensive health careers pathway program. It aims to prepare socio-economically diverse high school students, particularly from City Heights in San Diego, for careers that provide livable wages and upward mobility. The main objective of this initiative is to train students to become future leaders and strong advocates for socio-economically diverse communities, while inspiring them to lead innovative approaches to youth development, health career preparation, and wellness. The curriculum of the program is uniquely designed to introduce students to a variety of health careers and support them academically to reach their highest potential in high school, higher education, and career goals. Key topics covered include policy issues, exposure to diverse patient populations, and improving oral and written communication. The program also emphasizes on imparting soft skills required to be community advocates. Enrichment activities, field trips, skills workshops, and mentoring sessions form an integral part of the curriculum. FACES for the Future follows a three-year academic and career preparation format, starting from the sophomore year of the students. This program is delivered via a blend of in-class instruction and practical exposure through internships and field trips. The program fosters a supportive environment populated with adult role models who embody the core values of the program. The instructors and mentors associated with the program are health professionals who guide the students throughout their learning journey. The program actively collaborates with teachers and school leaders to refer students for tutoring and provides academic/college advising, thereby ensuring a comprehensive learning experience. Participation in FACES for the Future requires students to be enrolled in either San Diego Unified School District’s Hoover High School's Academy for Health and Healthier Communities (AHHC) or the College, Career, and Technical Education (CCTE). By the end of the program, participants gain the confidence, skills, and support to pursue their dreams, thereby changing the face of health.
