The Fashion Construction course, offered by the School of Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC), provides a platform for students aged 14-18 to learn how to design, construct, and sew their own garments. The curriculum includes pattern making, where students begin by developing original pattern blocks. They explore pattern drafting and draping, documenting their three-dimensional exploration with photography and/or drawing. The course also involves visits to the Art Institute of Chicago and access to the Fashion Resource Center at SAIC. Students tap into various materials such as paper, muslin, second-hand clothing, and fabric off the bolt to build their concepts and execute their designs. The course instructor is Brady Drose and the program is delivered in-person at the Sullivan Center Building. The course runs from early October to mid-December, with classes held every Sunday from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Please note that there will be no class on the 1st of December. The registration deadline for the course is at the end of September. This course does not offer credit and has two pricing options, $600 for the non-credit option and $1,785 for the credit option. It is important to note that participants will not earn any formal certifications upon completion of the course. However, the skills and knowledge gained from this course, such as the ability to design and construct a garment from start to finish, are invaluable. This course allows students to reflect and expand on their own personal style and ambition, equipping them with the practical skills needed in the field of fashion construction.
