The Fashion Design course, offered by the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC), is crafted for high school students aged 14-18 who have an interest in contemporary fashion design. The main objective of this course is to explore current fashion design techniques and materials. The curriculum is robust, with students developing skills in illustrating the fashion figure, styling, draping, and fabric selection. Participants will become acquainted with the history of fashion design, new research, and documentation methods, and will be exposed to contemporary designers and design practices. The course utilizes resources such as SAIC's Fashion Resource Center, which houses a library on fashion, the history of costume, a number of individual garments and accessories of historical importance, and a rich collection of visual material. Students will also have access to the Art Institute of Chicago's collection of art and textiles to create an informed, thoughtful, and creative approach to design. The class will draw on these resources to develop unique textile and garment designs, understand clothing as a language, and learn how garments communicate and what they signify. The course is delivered in-person at the Sullivan Center Building. It starts on October 6th, with classes held every Sunday from 10:00 AM - 1:00 PM, until mid-December. Please note that there is no class on December 1st. The course is instructed by Brady Drose, although no specific details about the instructor's qualifications or background are provided. Registration for the course closes in late September. It is worth noting that the course does not provide college credit and costs $600. The program's outcomes include skills in illustrating the fashion figure, styling, draping the form, developing patterns, an increased knowledge of the history of individual garments, research/documentation, and exposure to contemporary designers and a selected history of fashion.
