NYFA’s Teen Film Camps offer an immersive experience in filmmaking, combining in-class instruction with on-set production. Students gain hands-on experience in directing, screenwriting, digital camera operation, lighting, and editing, with opportunities to collaborate on film projects in rotating crew positions. The program emphasizes the art of visual storytelling, teaching students how camera movement, editing, and composition enhance the narrative and underlying drama of a film. Each camp culminates in a celebratory screening of student-directed films, open to family, friends, and faculty. The curriculum covers essential filmmaking topics, including directing, scriptwriting, and working with actors. Students learn to write original screenplays, progressing from initial story ideas to completed scripts under the guidance of experienced faculty. Technical skills such as operating industry-standard HDSLR cameras, digital editing, and lighting are introduced from day one, with additional review sessions available for students needing extra instruction. Editing instruction balances technical skills with the theory and conventions behind creative editing choices. Students participate in a collaborative environment, directing films and rotating through key crew roles to gain comprehensive experience. Instructors provide personalized feedback on scripts, shooting plans, and final films. For those unable to attend in person, the Online Film Directing Workshops offer a flexible, modular format, allowing students to explore storytelling through film remotely. Whether in-person or online, NYFA’s Teen Film Camps provide a dynamic and intensive introduction to the world of filmmaking.
