The Future Achievers in Science and Technology (FAST) is a two-day, on-campus program offered by Harvey Mudd College, aimed at high-achieving, college-bound high school seniors who demonstrate strong potential to make a significant impact within the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The program emphasizes the experiences of communities that are historically excluded from STEM, including but not limited to women, Black, Indigenous, or Latinx, students from low-income backgrounds, rural backgrounds, students with disabilities, and students who are first-generation to college. During the FAST program, participants have the opportunity to attend a mix of presentations, mock classes, lab demonstrations, and makerspace activities which are led by college faculty and tailored to the academic interests of the participants. These activities provide an exploration of leadership and inclusion within STEM, the Harvey Mudd College admission process, student life, academic approach, and research opportunities. The FAST program is held on two separate dates, and participants are invited to attend only one of these sessions. The program is open to U.S. Citizens and permanent residents who live in the United States and its territories. Interested high school seniors intending to enter college in the following fall are encouraged to apply. The instructors for the FAST program are faculty members at Harvey Mudd College. These faculty members guide participants through presentations, classes, and lab demonstrations. Although specific details about the faculty and their qualifications are not explicitly stated, the faculty at Harvey Mudd College are known for their expertise and dedication to teaching. The benefits of participating in the FAST program are manifold. Participants get a glimpse of student life by staying overnight in the college dorms with current students, which allows them to form meaningful connections with campus leadership, staff, and other community members. By actively participating in the program, students can gain a better understanding of the STEM field, college life, and the Harvey Mudd College admission process. Additionally, participants receive a fee waiver for their first-year application to Harvey Mudd College.
