The Future Advancers of Science and Technology (FAST) program, facilitated by Stanford University, aims to support high school students in their pursuit of scientific and technological solutions to societal challenges. The program's primary objective is to guide students in conducting original scientific research, with an emphasis on problem-solving and innovation. Students from Andrew P. Hill, James Lick, and Independence high schools in East San Jose are mentored by Stanford University graduate students, exploring a range of scientific areas including chemistry, biology, physics, engineering, and data science. The FAST program operates on a bi-weekly schedule from September to April, with students meeting with their Stanford mentors every other Saturday. This in-person interaction allows students to design and implement their original research projects under guided supervision. In addition to these regular meetings, students have the opportunity to present their work at local and state science fairs, as well as an annual symposium held at Stanford University. The mentors involved in the FAST program are graduate students from Stanford University with diverse backgrounds in various scientific disciplines. These mentors provide guidance and support to the students, helping them navigate their research projects. Notable mentors include individuals from the fields of Material Science and Engineering, Geological Sciences, Chemical Engineering, Biology, Physics, Applied Physics, and many more. The FAST program is open to students enrolled in the East San Jose High School District, which includes Andrew P. Hill, James Lick, and Independence high schools. The expectation is for students to come out of the program with a clearer vision of what it takes to become a scientist or engineer, along with a supportive network to aid them in their future endeavors. This program has also assisted students in applying for further scientific opportunities and has provided recommendations and support for college and financial aid applications for students who successfully complete the program.
