"Futures: Business Decision Making" is a course offered by the University of California San Diego that aims to refine high school students' professional leadership skills by allowing them to practice business management techniques in small-group settings. Through the examination of day-to-day management challenges in the workplace, students will determine alternative responses and approaches, and recommend solutions with appropriate feedback. The course employs the use of case studies to integrate all that the students have learned about the many dimensions of technical and interpersonal management. The course is delivered in an online asynchronous format, which means it can be completed at the student's own pace between the published start and end dates. No synchronous attendance is required. The course typically lasts a few months, with previous iterations running from late March to early June, and from late July to early August. The course is taught by experienced instructors such as Dan Rudick, a management consultant and business advisor with a 30-year career as founder, chairman & CEO of several companies, and Bobby Gordon, an award-winning higher education instructor, advisor, marketing and branding specialist, consultant, and alcohol/other drug counselor and educator. Rudick has an industrial engineering degree from a prestigious European school and an MBA from the University of Connecticut, while Gordon has served as an instructor at multiple higher education institutions. Prior completion of the "Futures: Elements of Marketing" course is a prerequisite for enrolling in "Futures: Business Decision Making". The course is part of a series, and participants must complete each course in the series in order, earning a passing grade in each course before enrolling in the next one. Upon completion of the course, students will have a solid understanding of business management techniques, which will be critical in their professional leadership pursuits.
