The Garden Apprentice Program (GAP) at Brooklyn Botanic Garden is a unique learning opportunity geared towards teenagers with an interest in urban agriculture and the environment. The program provides a hands-on experience in one of the world's most prominent public gardens. Over the course of nine months, from March to November, apprentices engage in spring training, summer programming, and maintain a consistent commitment throughout the spring and fall. The curriculum of the GAP is structured around four tiers. Apprentices learn about botany, environmentalism, urban farming, and gain practical gardening skills. They grow and harvest fruits, vegetables, and herbs in the Children's Garden and facilitate lessons to educate children about plants and nature. Apprentices also explore the Botanic Garden’s plant collections and develop important job skills including teamwork, communication, and leadership. Each tier presents its own unique focus and offers apprentices the chance to refine their skills, with Tier 4 apprentices even receiving leadership training and beginning the college application process. The program is delivered in-person, with apprentices spending a significant portion of their time outdoors, engaging in activities like gardening, cooking with fresh ingredients, crafting and exploring nature. The schedule varies depending on the tier, but typically includes weekday commitments, with specific times and dates outlined for each tier. Regarding eligibility, the program is open to students in 8th grade and above, with each tier having specific grade level requirements or the successful completion of the previous tier. Tier 1 is open to students in 8th or 9th grade, Tier 2 to students in the 10th grade or those who have completed Tier 1, and so on. Applications for the program typically become available in the fall. On completion of the apprenticeship, participants receive a monetary reimbursement and, more importantly, valuable skills and experiences. They gain an in-depth understanding of urban agriculture, environmental education, and leadership. The program also equips them with practical skills in gardening, communication, teamwork, and teaching. The most advanced apprentices even have the opportunity to start the college application process while still in the program.
