The Health Sciences Yearlong Academy at Dell Medical School, part of the University of Texas at Austin, offers high school students a comprehensive opportunity to explore health sciences. The main objective of the academy is to provide students with a wide range of learning experiences, from understanding health sciences to developing strategies for successful mentor experiences, and from collaborative projects to interacting with health professions guest speakers. The academy operates from September to May, with students participating in monthly Saturday sessions at Dell Med. Each session lasts for four hours and includes various activities such as working on an interest-based project, learning about health sciences and college readiness, and hearing guest speakers share their personal and professional experiences. Students also have the opportunity to work with mentors, who are Dell Med students and Health Sciences Summer Camps counselors, to build both academic and personal skills. The academy is open to Health Sciences Summer Camp alumni in the 10th through 12th grades. Students are required to choose an area of focus and develop a project with the aim of directly impacting the local community. In addition to the health sciences curriculum, the academy also focuses on preparing students for college by sharing valuable information and best practices related to financial aid, college deadlines, essay writing, course selection, and college applications. Upon completion of the academy, students will have a comprehensive understanding of health sciences and will be prepared for college, equipped with skills to navigate the application and admission process. They will also have the opportunity to directly impact their community through their interest-based projects and will have developed strong mentor-mentee relationship skills.
