The High School Business Internship, offered by the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), is targeted towards high school students interested in pursuing a business career. The main objective of the program is to provide students with real-world business experience, leadership development, and career awareness while they continue their regular school curriculum. During the academic year, students will attend their regular classes for half a day and engage in the internship program for up to 4 hours a day, 5 days a week. An integral part of the internship experience is a dedicated mentorship from PNNL professionals in a specified business area. The program also includes educational activities, laboratory demonstrations, field trips, and workshops to enhance students' understanding of the business world. The application process for the internship starts in early February and the internship itself occurs during the school year between August and May. Applicants are expected to submit a cover letter explaining their interest in the internship and a resume detailing their education background, academic information, and personal references. Apart from the valuable business experience, the internship offers students elective credits that count towards graduation through a collaboration with their high school's work-based learning (WBL) program. Through this internship, students have the opportunity to get a head start in their careers, establish long-lasting relationships, and gain a successful future, just as Laurie True did, who after her business internship at PNNL, has been working at the lab for over 25 years.
