High School Changemakers, offered by Seattle University, is a program focused on supporting students through their high school journey and into post-secondary life. With a cohort capacity of up to 20 scholars per grade at Garfield High School, the program emphasizes community building, academic readiness, and group-identified interests. It is designed to inspire participants to become civically engaged leaders who graduate on time with a well-defined path to college and/or a career. The scholars work closely with student mentors from Seattle University to achieve their goals. Lesson plans created by these mentors revolve around themes centered on social-emotional wellness, college and career readiness, and community engagement. Tutoring sessions are held twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school in the Garfield High School library, where the university students offer support with homework, test prep, and more. To be eligible for the program, scholars must qualify for the Washington State College Bound Scholarship. The program's key outcome is the development of scholars into engaged leaders, with a clear direction for their post-secondary life. Upon high school graduation, all eligible Changemakers receive a four-year scholarship to attend Seattle University, highlighting the program's commitment to fostering academic growth and success.
