The High School Volunteer Internship Program offered by the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office provides a well-rounded experience in the criminal justice system, with the aim of assisting individuals in making informed career choices. Participants gain insight into the functioning of the State Attorney’s Office, its role within the criminal justice framework, and the various agencies it interacts with. The curriculum of the program is designed to provide practical experience after an initial training period. Participants may be involved in a range of activities such as assisting the public with criminal/civil matters, taking sworn testimony from victims and witnesses, attending bond hearings, running criminal history records, assisting victims with Injunctions for Protection, and researching case law. They also learn about professional responsibility and ethics, relations with victims, witnesses, judges, court personnel, police officers, and the public. Training sessions on case preparation, criminal law, and trial practice are also part of the program's curriculum. The program is delivered through a hands-on approach, with participants playing active roles in various tasks within the Miami-Dade State Attorney's Office. The program requires a commitment of 16 to 20 hours per week, per semester, for at least three months. Applicants must also pass a background check to be accepted into the program. The experience gained through the program is given considerable weight for post-graduation employment with the office. However, even if participants choose different career paths, the program provides a unique opportunity to gain familiarity with the operation of the criminal justice system.
