"HLD038 - Introduction to Footwear and Accessories: Design and Construction" is an in-person course offered at the main campus of the Fashion Institute of Technology. The primary objective of this course is to provide students with the foundational skills needed to bring their footwear and accessory design philosophies to life. The curriculum includes instruction on sketching, rendering, pattern making, and industrial machine sewing, equipping students with both design knowledge and hands-on skills. Participants will apply these skills to create two wearable leather or leather alternative items: a pair of customized sneakers and an original bag. Thus, by the end of the course, students will have both 2D and 3D portfolio-quality outcomes. The course is scheduled for Saturdays from 9:30AM to 12:30PM, running from late September to mid-December. This results in a total of 30 contact hours. As for prerequisites, the course is open to high school students entering grades 9 through 12 as of the upcoming fall semester. It's also important for students to note that certain course materials are required, including drawing materials and specific shoe materials. In terms of outcomes, students will gain a practical understanding of footwear and accessory design and construction, including the use of industrial machine sewing. They will also develop a portfolio showcasing their design and construction skills in the form of two wearable items. This course provides a solid foundation for those interested in furthering their knowledge and skills in the field of fashion design.
