Back to database

HOSA’s competitive events provide students with a platform to develop and showcase their skills in various areas of healthcare. These events span multiple categories, including health sciences, emergency preparedness, and leadership. Students can participate either individually or in teams, with some events tailored for students with disabilities under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). Participants progress through regional, state, and national competitions, culminating at the International Leadership Conference (ILC). Each event emphasizes practical skills and theoretical knowledge essential for healthcare careers. Depending on the event, students may complete written exams, perform hands-on skills, or deliver presentations to panels of judges. Examples include medical spelling bees, patient care scenarios, and public health awareness projects. Events vary in type and format: - Exams: Health Science events like Medical Terminology and Pathophysiology focus on written tests. - Performance: Skill-based competitions, such as Physical Therapy or CPR/First Aid, test students’ practical abilities through mock scenarios. - Teamwork Events: Biomedical Debate and Health Education promote collaboration among teams of 2-6 members. - Recognition Events: Awards like the Barbara James Service Award and HOSA Happenings honor members for community service and storytelling. Through these competitions, students gain leadership experience, build confidence, and explore career paths in healthcare, with top performers earning scholarships, certificates, and national recognition at the ILC
