The Hospital Opportunity Program for Students (HOPS), offered by the English Montreal School Board, aims to familiarize students with the broad operations of a hospital. It provides a platform for Secondary V students to observe and assist medical personnel, offering an insightful look into the medical field. This observational and occasionally participatory program is designed for students interested in exploring a career in medicine, specifically within a large hospital setting. The program is delivered in-person at the Jewish General Hospital, with students assigned to different departments throughout the program's duration. Students will experience 10 departmental rotations and attend four evening lectures. Some departments that have previously hosted HOPS students include Acute Geriatrics, Cardiology, Radiology, Oncology, and Hemodialysis, amongst others. However, the specific departments can vary from year to year. Participation in the program requires a commitment from the students to complete all necessary documentation and attend all rotations and evening lectures. Students are expected to manage any missed tests or assignments at their schools due to their participation in the program. Consent from parents is required for participation, and the program is open to Secondary V students. Upon successful completion of the program, each participant will receive a certificate. The program does not allow students to choose their preferred departments due to the limited number of spaces in each department. The HOPS program, therefore, provides a balanced exposure to various medical departments, offering students a well-rounded view of hospital operations.
