The Health Professions Recruitment and Exposure Program (HPREP) at the UT Southwestern Medical Center is an enrichment initiative designed to introduce high school students to the fields of medicine and science. Emphasizing hands-on experience, the program includes an assortment of workshops covering topics such as CPR, cow eye dissection, DNA extraction, and infectious diseases, among others. Additionally, the program provides exposure to various health careers and job responsibilities through interactive workshops, and participants gain real-world insights through activities like blood transfusion techniques. The program is taught by faculty, staff, and students from UT Southwestern Medical School, School of Health Professions, School of Public Health, and Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, who serve as mentors. These mentors offer an understanding of the commitment required to pursue a future in science and medicine. The program is open to students in grades 10 through 12 with an interest in medicine or science. HPREP is conducted in person. It spans three weeks in January, with each week dedicated to various activities such as interactive workshops, a college and careers fair, and a parents session and panel. Applications for HPREP are typically accepted from late October to late November. The outcomes of HPREP include a comprehensive understanding of health care professions and the commitment needed for a future in science and medicine. By the end of the program, participants will have gained valuable hands-on experience and exposure to a variety of medical and scientific disciplines, preparing them for potential careers in these fields.
