Back to database

The Human Exploration Rover Challenge (HERC) hosted by NASA is an engineering design competition that seeks to engage students worldwide in the next phase of human space exploration. Drawing inspiration from the Apollo and Artemis missions, HERC provides students with the opportunity to design, develop, build, and test human-powered rovers capable of traversing challenging terrain and carrying out various mission tasks. The overarching objective of this challenge is to inspire diverse scientists, engineers, explorers, and other STEM professionals, in line with the Artemis Generation's goals. HERC is a hands-on experience that emphasizes the designing, constructing, and testing of technologies, particularly those related to traversing unique environmental terrains. Teams of students earn points through the successful completion of design reviews, developing a rover that meets all challenge criteria, and overcoming course obstacles and mission tasks. The team with the highest number of points accumulated throughout the project year in each category (high school and college/university) is declared the winner. The challenge, held annually, is conducted at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama. The event dates for the upcoming challenge are set for April 11-12, 2025. The competition is open to both U.S. and international students at high school and university levels, providing a global platform for young minds to showcase their skills and creativity. Participants in HERC can expect to gain a wealth of knowledge and experience in the field of engineering design and space exploration technologies. This student design challenge encourages the next generation of scientists and engineers to engage in the design process, providing innovative concepts and unique perspectives. It also prepares them for potential future roles in planning space missions, including crewed missions to other worlds.
