At ImpactLab, students get the opportunity to choose from an exciting menu of academic experiences taught by current Wentworth faculty on campus. Choose one of these two-week-long summer adventures and begin your exploration in science, engineering, technology, or design. We are excited to share this summer's course offerings below. All tracks will have a hands-on learning component. Session I - Course Offerings The Art & Science of Making (Session I) In this creative adventure, you will explore techniques in Computer-Aided Design (CAD), laser cutting, 3D printing, and other tools and practices for designing and making your own inventions. Be Your Own Shark: Exploring Business and Entrepreneurship (Session I) This program will guide you through the entrepreneurial process: from how to come up with ideas and evaluate their feasibility to become a business, to how to raise funds all the way to market launch. Alongside Wentworth faculty, you will create your own business idea and bring it to life at the culminating pitch competition. Computer Science and Programming Fundamentals (Session I) Whether you are a beginner with programming or looking to refresh your knowledge of computer science, this program is geared toward all levels of computer expertise. You will explore python and cover concepts such as programming structures, data types, loops, conditionals, and functions while building a computer project of your choosing alongside Wentworth faculty. Cutting Edge Construction (Session I) Learn about construction methods and materials. Explore the use of cutting-edge technologies in construction such as drones, robotics, and 3D modeling. Visit an active Boston construction site to see the construction process in real-time. Introduction to Architecture and Design (Session I + Session II) Architecture, Industrial Design, and Interior Design include the design of products, games, environments, buildings and cities. Through hands-on experience drawing and making, you will build your portfolio and learn how each discipline, and design at every scale, makes the world a better place. Introduction to Robotics Engineering (Session I) Find out what makes a robot tick. You'll discover the secrets to building the world’s most advanced robots using innovative technologies, and the interplay in the application of electrical engineering, computer programming, and mechanical engineering towards robotics. Video Game Physics (Session I) You probably know how to play video games, but have you ever stopped to think logically about how they work? Perhaps the most important concept is motion, whether it is conveyed in the arc of Mario’s jump or by moving the world backward when the gamer has Link run forward. In this class, we’ll discuss some basic laws of motion and develop the skills you need to design a basic playable video game! Session II Course Offerings Computer Science & Society (Session II) How do we use digital tools to make the world a better place? Digital humanities might hold the key. At the intersection of computing and humanities, this course explores the use of technical tools to study social problems while also exploring the computer science behind the tools. CSI Wentworth (Session II) This is a project-oriented course and will aim to introduce you to analyses of forensic evidence from a biological science perspective. You will also be introduced to criminological research, theories, and criminal court procedures from a social science perspective. Engineering Exploration (Session II) Think you want to be an engineer but aren't sure what area is right for you? Spend a few days exploring civil, mechanical, electrical, and biomedical engineering to find out which engineering field is the best fit. Game Development + Multimedia Studio (Session II) This program provides a guided introduction to the concepts and skills behind game development and multimedia applications using the Unity game engine and C# programming language. You will learn to take a game from concept to creation, learn about the mechanics of game development, AI for games, 2D and 3D art animations, sound, and visual effects, and multimedia programming. The Hidden Universe of Cybersecurity (Session II) Your social media accounts, your cell phone, your computer, your shopping habits—all are under threat from cybercriminals. Explore the techniques hackers use to gain access to personal information and how cybersecurity professionals work to identify and mitigate those risks. Introduction to Architecture and Design (Session I + Session II ) Architecture, Industrial Design, and Interior Design include the design of products, games, environments, buildings, and cities. Through hands-on experience drawing and making, you will build your portfolio and learn how each discipline, and design at every scale, makes the world a better place. Women Innovators: Build, Lead and Grow! (Session II) Whether you’re an inventor, innovator, or entrepreneur, generating ideas and solutions that solve real-world problems can be a game-changer! Come learn more about the process of innovation and entrepreneurship while digging deeper into women’s leadership and the unique skills and strengths you already have, which will help you reach your goals.
