The Intensive Community Program (ICP) offered by Boston Youth Symphony Orchestras is a nationally recognized instrumental training program. It is designed to address financial and cultural accessibility barriers that often prevent students from underrepresented communities in Boston from participating in classical music opportunities. The program specifically targets students of color, including African American, Latin, Caribbean, and other populations historically underrepresented in classical music. Students who join the program generally have little or no prior music training. The curriculum is structured to teach them discipline, creativity, and technical proficiency, which can enable them to audition into one of BYSO’s prestigious ensembles. The program offers abundant resources, including financial aid for orchestra tuition, weekly lessons, and instrument access. Students are provided with positive support and mentorship to help them achieve personal goals, develop high aspirations, and attain musical excellence. The program is taught by skilled faculty, including Nicole Cariglia the ICP artistic director, Marta Zurad the ICP conductor, and Janet Underhill the assistant director for winds. The program's faculty includes a diverse team of instrumental specialists, ensuring students receive comprehensive training. The ICP has been recognized for its transformative impact and artistic merit, having been awarded the Commonwealth Award by the Massachusetts Cultural Council. The ICP also performs free concerts throughout Boston, providing unique concert experiences for children and families. Furthermore, the program has established successful and lasting partnerships with various organizations throughout Boston and the surrounding communities. The application for the program typically opens in early September. Though the exact duration of the program isn't specified, its longstanding history of over 20 years suggests a sustainable and impactful learning opportunity. The outcomes of the program are primarily attuned to the acquisition of skills and resources necessary for personal growth and academic success. Through disciplined training and mentorship, the students are enabled to achieve musical excellence, and potentially join one of BYSO's ensembles.
