The Intermediate Symphony Orchestra offered by Vancouver Youth Symphony Orchestra (VYSO) is conducted by the award-winning Mr. Jin Zhang. It seeks to push the boundaries of young musicians' skills by introducing woodwinds, brass, and percussion into the orchestra, enabling the performance of large classical and romantic works. The curriculum is designed to foster the development of ensemble skills across different musical styles, in addition to advancing rhythm and sound production. The Intermediate Symphony Orchestra is expected to be an in-person learning opportunity, considering the nature of orchestra performances. The program runs annually, and each year around May, auditions are held for the following year. Participants are required to be at least 12 years old and are recommended to be at a Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) Level 7-8 on their primary instrument. Performers who play wind, brass, and percussion instruments need to have been playing their instrument for a minimum of two years. Participation in the Intermediate Symphony Orchestra would immerse students in a vibrant community of talented young musicians, enhancing their ensemble skills and honing their proficiency in their primary instruments. The exact outcomes would depend on individual performance and commitment, but the exposure to diverse musical styles and the opportunity to work under a distinguished conductor like Mr. Jin Zhang could significantly enhance the musical knowledge and skills of the participants.
