The International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) is a prestigious global competition that brings together the brightest high school chemistry students from around the world. Each participating nation sends a team of four students, who compete individually in two intensive five-hour exams: a laboratory practical and a written theoretical examination. These exams assess both their practical lab skills and their depth of theoretical chemistry knowledge. The competition fosters international cooperation and celebrates outstanding achievement in chemistry. Currently, around 80 countries participate in the IChO, with new countries required to observe two consecutive Olympiads before sending their own teams. Students are ranked individually based on their performance, with the top 12% receiving gold medals, followed by silver and bronze medals for the next highest achievers. Additional recognition is given through honorable mentions and special awards for the highest overall score, as well as the best scores in the practical and theoretical components. The IChO is a demanding competition, requiring a deep mastery of chemistry concepts and the ability to apply them in practical and theoretical contexts. Participants are not only recognized for their academic prowess but also for their capacity to relate chemistry to real-world applications, making this competition a significant challenge and an honor for students dedicated to the field of chemistry.
