The International Geography Olympiad (iGeo), organized by the International Geographical Union (IGU), is an annual competition targeting the best geography students aged 16 to 19 from around the world. The main objectives of iGeo are to stimulate active interest in geographical and environmental studies, highlight the significance of geography as a senior secondary school subject, and foster international understanding through social contacts among young people from different countries. The competition encompasses a written test, a multimedia test, and substantial fieldwork, which requires participants to engage in observation, cartographic representation, and geographical analysis. In addition to these core elements, the program includes poster presentations by teams and cultural exchanges, providing students with opportunities to interact and explore the host city. iGeo is traditionally held in-person, with locations varying annually, although it has been conducted online during certain years due to exceptional circumstances like the COVID-19 pandemic. Previous iterations have taken place in various cities across the globe, such as Bandung, Indonesia, and Maynooth & Dublin, Ireland. Participants are selected through national geography Olympiads, ensuring they represent the elite of young geographical minds from their respective countries. The event aims to contribute to the global discourse on geography's educational importance and to enhance young people's geographical skills and knowledge.
