Internship Placement Program: Doctors Reaching Minority Men Exploring Neuroscience

R. MMEN is a program designed to reverse this trend by opening doors to career advancement within medicine to underrepresented communities. The program is a partnership between the Mount Sinai Center for Excellence in Youth Education, the Mount Sinai Department of Neurosurgery, and the Friends of Odysseus, a mentoring and career development program for Black and Hispanic/Latino medical students, residents and faculty. The program will be comprised of clinical immersion within neurosurgery and related fields, classroom-based learning on topics pertinent to career development, and project-based learning. Highlights
• Immersion in inpatient and outpatient medical practice in neurosurgery and allied fields
• Interaction with med students, residents and attendings to learn about day-to-day practice
• Instruction on how to use a medical library and its resources to conduct biomedical research
• Classroom-based and informal learning about hard and soft skills critical to becoming a physician (i.e., test-taking, presentation skills, time management)
• Summer-long project-based learning opportunity
• Opportunities to create lasting informal and formal mentoring relationships Requirements • Full attendance • Regular oral and written progress reports • Completion of a final written and oral research report
