The Junior Strings program, presented by the Illinois Symphony Orchestra, is a string orchestra program in which members are currently learning and mastering the skills presented in Sound Innovations for String Orchestra: Book 1. The curriculum promotes the development of ensemble skills, proper string technique, and high-quality repertoire. Students are encouraged to augment their ensemble training with private lessons and are expected to commit to daily instrument practice. Delivered in-person, the program spans approximately 30 weeks, with students participating in 1-hour group lessons and rehearsals. The Junior Strings class meets weekly at the Grant Conservatory of Music and Dance in Springfield, IL, with the session commencing towards the end of August. The instructor for the program is Maria Emmons, however, no specific information on her background or qualifications is provided. To participate in Junior Strings, students are expected to have about a year of experience or have completed the Starter Strings program in the previous season. Auditions are required for students who have not completed Starter Strings. Upon completion of the Junior Strings program, students will have enhanced their ensemble and string techniques, as well as their ability to perform high-quality repertoire. Furthermore, they are encouraged to continue advancing their skills through further involvement with the Illinois Symphony Youth Orchestras' programs. Tuition for the Junior Strings program is $250, covering all sessions for the duration of the program.
