The Math Mentorship program is a unique offering from the Department of Mathematics at the University of Toronto. It provides high school students with a keen interest in mathematics, the opportunity to engage in a real-world research project under the guidance of graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, and faculty members from the university. The main objective of this program is to provide a deeper understanding of mathematical study and research, thereby encouraging students to pursue a future career in the field. The mentorship program begins with an opening reception in January and concludes with a closing ceremony in May where the students have the opportunity to present their research projects. These ceremonies are hosted in-person at the University of Toronto's St. George campus, making attendance mandatory. In addition to these events, mentees meet with their mentors regularly, approximately once or twice a month. These meetings can occur virtually or at the university's downtown location, scheduled at a mutually convenient time. The program is highly competitive and not all applicants may receive a placement. The application deadline typically falls in mid-November, with successful candidates being contacted by early December. Participation in the program requires a fee of $150 plus tax. The mentors involved in this program, who are graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, and faculty members, bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the table, providing a valuable learning experience for the high school students. Upon completion of the program, participants gain in-depth knowledge of a mathematical research project, thereby enhancing their problem-solving skills and understanding of mathematics. The exposure to actual research methods and the opportunity to learn from experienced mentors also provides a unique opportunity for participants to explore mathematics beyond the traditional high school curriculum.
